Pyrrhus Concer Homestead
The Pyrrhus Concer Homestead will be located at 51 Pond Lane, honoring and preserving the legacy of Mr. Pyrrhus Concer who was born a slave in 1814 but freed by NY State law in 1827. His is one of the most documented African American lives in Southampton's early history; from his participation in numerous whaling voyages exemplifying the diversity of America's whaling history to his contribution to the life and culture of Southampton Village. The Town of Southampton purchased the property using Community Preservation Funds and the Village will reconstruct the original home with the intent to provide historical education with the Southampton African American Museum. The Pyrrhus Concer Homestead will offer a rare, historic resource that embodies African American tradition and choice.
